The Adventures of Tom Sawyer – Mark Twain
ටොම් සෝයර් – Rani Senarathna Rajapaksha
There are no people who have never heard of Tom Sawyer in the world. Because, it is very close character to our childhood lives. Personally, I’d like to call Tom as the Hero of all Playful Kids. Because, he is the best matching lad to this name.
So, who is this Tom..?
He is a 12 years old boy, who lived in the village called St.Petersburg which near to Mississippi river in America, 1840s. His family consisted of half-brother, Sid Sawyer, a cousin, Mary and an aunt, Polly , the sister of his dead mother. In Tom’s life, he always loved to do full of boyhood adventures but always getting into troubles and he had two great friends to help with his work who are Joe Harper and Huckleberry FInn. Also, aunt Polly could never stop these Tom’s boyish pranks but she loved him dearly. Other thing is, Tom is a pure-hearted and good lover, no matter how bad. The girl who won his noble heart is, Becky Thatcher, the daughter of the judge. I couldn’t stop laughing while reading some of Tom’s boyhood adventures and pranks, example the whitewash, island trip and treasure hunt. According to Tom, he is a noble man who will never second to anyone. Also, he has own logics and theories and will apply them to his adventure works.
Actually, Tom Sawyer is our past childhood and this character takes us back to those sweet memories. For the reason is, the book was written based on real experiences of Mark twain and his childhood friends. Although this book has written for the enjoyment of children, the real truth is elders can enjoy as well.
My gratitude to the translator who brought us the beautiful experiences of a child living in a distance country and made us happy so much.
